Cooking Tips for Easy Air Fryer Homemade Crispy French Fries

When you think about easy air fryer homemade crispy French fries, you might imagine the tantalizing aroma wafting through your kitchen, reminiscent of a cozy diner. Creating that perfect batch of golden, crispy fries is like a culinary rite of passage, and with a few helpful tips, you can master it like a pro!

Selecting the Right Potatoes

The type of potato you use can make a world of difference. I recommend using russet potatoes for their high starch content, which enhances the crispiness. If you’re feeling adventurous, try Yukon Golds for a creamier texture.

Cutting Techniques Matter

Aim for uniformity! Whether you prefer thin or thick fries, ensuring that they are cut evenly will help them cook at the same rate. A simple kitchen knife works wonders, or a mandoline can make the process quicker and more precise.

Don’t Skip the Soaking

Soaking your cut fries in water for at least 30 minutes removes excess starch, leading to a crispier fry. After soaking, make sure to pat them dry thoroughly to avoid excess moisture, which can prevent that coveted crunch.

Preheat for Best Results

Just like any good dish, air frying benefits from a preheated air fryer. Turn it on a few minutes before you add your fries to ensure they start cooking immediately, sealing in flavors and achieving that desirable crispiness.

Description

Crispy and delicious air fryer french fries made from fresh russet potatoes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large russet potatoes, peeled and cut lengthwise (See recipe notes below.)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Place the sliced potatoes in a large bowl with cold water.
  2. Allow the potatoes to soak in the water for at least 30 minutes, preferably an hour.
  3. Drain the water from the bowl. Dry the fries completely with paper towels.
  4. Coat the fries with olive oil. You can toss them in a large bowl or spread the fries onto a flat surface and coat them. Sprinkle with the salt, pepper, and optional seasoning salt.
  5. Add half of the fries to the Air Fryer basket. Adjust the temperature to 380 degrees and cook for 15-20 minutes. Set a timer for 10 minutes and stop and shake the basket at the 10-minute mark (once).
  6. Use your judgment. If the fries need to be crisper, allow to cook for additional time. If the fries look crisp prior to 15 minutes, remove them. I cooked both of my batches for almost 20 minutes.
  7. Also, use your judgment to determine if the fries will need to be cooked in batches. This will vary based on the size of your air fryer. You do not want to overfill the basket.
  8. When the first half finishes, cook the remaining half (if necessary).
  9. Cool before serving.

Notes

  • For best results, soak the potatoes to remove excess starch for a crispier texture.
  • Cooking times may vary based on the size of your air fryer and the thickness of the fries.
